This weather is sure taking it’s toll! We need some extra whole food energy to get us through these cold, germ filled days! :). Here is a fast, easy smoothie that is nothing but the essentials and still tastes good….
Frozen blueberries….1 cup
Three or four frozen strawberries
Huge handful of spinach ( I fill my blender to almost the top with fresh loose leaf spinach.
Water, to a consistency of a smoothie….or whatever consistency you like.
Blend and drink. You get 5 ish servings of fruits and veggies, tons of vitamins A and C, tons of trace minerals, and tons of phytonutrients and antioxidants.
Fun factoid about antioxidants….what are they?
Antioxidants are atoms with extra electrons. Okay….think of cells, which are made up of molecules which are made up of atoms, our smallest building blocks. Atoms have a nucleus with neutrons and protons, and electrons spin around the nucleus.
When we consume stuff that is bad for us, like fried food, sugars, and other ‘junk’ foods, free radicals are created. A free radical is an atom that is short electrons. When free radicals enter our body, they rob electrons from other atoms in order to stabilize themselves. Then, there are other atoms short electrons and they have to steal from neighboring atoms to stabilize, and this chain reaction continues, causing damage called oxidation, to the atoms which make up our cells.
When we have a diet rich in antioxidants, the antioxidants’ extra electrons are ‘borrowed’ stabilizing all of the atoms and stopping the free radical chain reactions, thus stopping the damage to our cells.
So….moral of the story….Mom was right, we need to eat our fruits and veggies! 🙂
