Dependable Vitamin D

December 5, 2010

As the weather turns colder and we are snuggled up in front of our fireplaces at night, an insidious evil is lurking, waiting to rear its ugly head. That evil is vitamin D deficiency…muahhh ha ha…[evil laugh].

Really, all kidding aside, vitamin D deficiency is a real problem in our modern desk-based society. Nearly 75% of all Caucasians, and 90% of darker skinned people north of Atlanta are deficient right now. The symptoms can range from none at all to chronic fatigue, mysterious muscle and bone aches, more colds and flu, and over time, cancers, heart disease, high blood pressure, and the list goes on!! Are you feeling lathargic, run down to the core? The problem could very well be vitamin D deficiency. What can you do about it? My favorite supplement for this is an actual food…well sort of…Carlson’s Lemon Flavored Cod Liver Oil. Take maybe 2-3 teaspoons of this a day, and you will feel your energy rebound in a few days if deficiency was causing your issue. Then, level it back to one teaspoon a day after about a month and see how you feel.Or, if you like to tan, UV light is the best source of this important vitamin.

You can request at your next physical to have your vitamin D level tested. Doctors are starting to learn the importance of Vitamin D, and are more willing to test and recommend tests. For the lion’s share of us, supplementing with Carlson’s in those amounts is a safe way to add a dose of goodness to your daily dietary intake. There is some awesome information on this great vitamin at http://grassrootshealth.net organized by a breast cancer survivor, Carole Baggerly, who is probably one of the most passionate advocates that I know. It’s worth a look. Vitamin D deficiency is the ROOT CAUSE of breast cancer. That’s right!! You read it here. Take a look at what Carole has to say on her site for more information. And, if you don’t like Cod Liver Oil [lemon really is pretty good..] go for any D3 supplement that is an oil capsule. Carlson’s also makes these.

To Your Health,
Tracie
